Iron Proteinate

Useful iron with no proven dog advantage

Iron proteinate is iron bound to amino acids or short protein fragments. It supplies iron for red blood cells when a recipe needs supplementation. Studies in other animals give mixed results, and no dog trial shows this form works better than iron sulfate.

Role in the food Supporting nutrient
What it is
A powdered feed mineral made by binding iron to amino acids or short protein fragments.
Made from
Soluble iron salts and protein fragments
Main job
Supplemental dietary iron
Typical amount
One supplier recommends 0.02 to 0.2% of finished feed
Watch for
Adding iron supplements without a diagnosis
Not the same as
Iron sulfate

Straight answer

Is Iron Proteinate safe for dogs?

Read it as a mineral, not a promise

Iron proteinate near the other mineral supplements fits its small-dose job. Check the food's nutritional adequacy statement and judge the recipe as a whole. This name does not prove better absorption, add meaningful protein or tell you how to treat anemia.

What it is

How it is made

Feed mineral suppliers combine a soluble iron salt with amino acids or partly broken-down protein. The resulting powder lets pet food makers add measured iron when the recipe's other ingredients do not supply enough.3,5

  1. 01 // Source Iron and protein A soluble iron salt and amino acids or partly broken-down protein provide the starting materials.
  2. 02 // Process Iron bound The iron binds to amino acids or short protein fragments to form a mineral complex.
  3. 03 // Process Powder prepared A supplier sells the finished material as a fine, free-flowing powder for measured addition to feed.
  4. 04 // Output Iron proteinate The powder reaches a pet food plant ready to be mixed into a mineral premix or recipe.

What is in it

15.8

% iron

The iron share listed for one commercial product. Iron proteinate is a concentrated mineral ingredient used in small amounts.

Iron 157.9 g/kg4
Crude protein 35%4
Ash 20%4

These figures describe one database listing, not every iron proteinate. Balchem's own sheet gives a different typical protein figure, so the ingredient name alone does not fix its composition.4,5

Why it is in the bag

A real iron source, added in tiny amounts

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Makers add it as a measured dose of iron, which dogs need to build hemoglobin in red blood cells. It is a concentrated powder, about 16% iron in one listing, so it is used in tiny amounts and often sits low on labels, which list ingredients by weight. Its job is the iron, not protein or bulk. Whether this bound form beats iron sulfate in dogs is unproven.2,4,7,9

  1. 01

    Covers an iron gap

Meat and plant ingredients contribute iron. A manufacturer adds a measured source when those ingredients leave the finished recipe short of its intended iron level.1

  2. 02

    Doses a trace mineral

A supplier guarantees at least 15% iron in its powder. That concentration lets a formulator add iron without treating the powder as a bulk ingredient.5

  3. 03

    Sells chelated positioning

Suppliers market the bound form as an absorption advantage. One chick trial favored a proteinate, and it does not demonstrate a benefit in dogs.2,5

  4. 04

    Limits unnecessary mineral spending

A dog trial found that its base recipe already supplied enough iron. Its authors identified lower formulation cost as a reason to omit supplementation when the recipe allows it.1

How much One supplier recommends 0.02 to 0.2% of finished feed for its product; that is not a measured dog food average.6

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Iron supports normal red blood cells

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Iron is required to make hemoglobin. In a 22-dog, 26-week trial, an iron-adequate diet maintained normal blood measures with or without added iron sulfate. Adequate iron matters; that trial did not test proteinate.1

  2. Brands say

Iron proteinate absorbs better than iron sulfate

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 14-day chick trial found a 117% hemoglobin response relative to sulfate; its funders included the proteinate supplier. No direct dog trial shows an absorption advantage.2

  3. Brands say

Every healthy dog needs added chelated iron

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 22-dog, 26-week trial found no improvement in iron-related blood measures from adding sulfate to an already adequate diet. It did not test proteinate, but it gives no reason to require added iron in every recipe.1

  4. Owners say

Iron proteinate treats a dog's anemia

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A food label provides neither a diagnosis nor a treatment dose. Veterinary guidance says iron deficiency in dogs usually follows blood loss, while other diseases also cause anemia. The cause needs to be identified.7

  5. Owners say

Iron proteinate adds meaningful food protein

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

One product listing reports 35% crude protein on a dry matter basis, but a supplier recommends adding its product at only 0.02 to 0.2% of finished feed. That amount cannot drive the food's protein level.4,6

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It has a specific job: supplying iron. The mineral is concentrated and added in small amounts. It is not there to provide bulk, calories or a meaningful share of the food's protein.4,6

  2. Q02

Is it better than iron sulfate?

    Not proven

One short chick trial favored proteinate over sulfate. It does not tell us that iron proteinate works better in a dog eating this food.2

  3. Q03

Will it fix my dog's anemia?

    No

Iron in food is for ordinary nutrition. In dogs, iron deficiency usually follows blood loss, and anemia has other causes. A dog with anemia needs its cause identified; this ingredient list cannot do that.7
