Rosemary
A minor herb with little proven dog benefit
Rosemary leaves add an herbal aroma to dog food, while concentrated rosemary extract is used to slow fat oxidation. At the small amounts tested in dogs, the leaves add little nutrition, and evidence for health benefits stops at blood markers.

Is Rosemary safe for dogs?
Treat rosemary as a small recipe detail
Rosemary near the end of an ingredient list tells you little about the food's nutrition or shelf life. Read the main ingredients, fat sources and nutritional adequacy statement first. If a bag claims rosemary preserves the food, ask whether it uses leaf or extract and what supports its shelf-life claim.

What it is
How it is made
Rosemary is harvested as a culinary herb. Its leaves are dried and milled so a small amount mixes through a recipe. In a dog feeding trial, the powder was added during kibble coating.1,4
- 01 // Source Rosemary leaves Leaves are collected from rosemary plants grown for food and other herb products.
- 02 // Process Washed and dried In the dog trial, researchers washed soil from the leaves and dried them completely.
- 03 // Process Ground fine The dried leaves were milled into a powder before addition to the food.
- 04 // Output Rosemary powder Ground leaf is ready for the recipe; concentrated extract requires a separate extraction process.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
113
g/kg fiber
Crude fiber in one dried-leaf sample. The small leaf additions tested in dogs make its fiber contribution negligible.
Why it is in the bag
A small flavor note, not a nutrient source
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add ground rosemary leaf for its herbal aroma. Labels list ingredients by weight, and rosemary often sits near the end, so it is likely too little to change the food's nutrition. A dog trial used only 0.025 to 0.05%, and the rosemary food was not eaten better. Slowing fat oxidation is a job for rosemary extract, which is a separate ingredient.1,4,5

01
Adds herbal aroma
Ground leaves bring rosemary's aroma to a recipe. Researchers added the powder during kibble coating, where a dog encounters it before eating.1
-
02
Offers an antioxidant option
Manufacturers use rosemary extract in antioxidant blends. They choose an antioxidant around the fat, processing conditions, desired shelf life and cost; a plain rosemary listing gives no preservation guarantee.2,4,8
How much A dog trial added powdered rosemary leaf at 0.025 or 0.05% of food; those amounts do not apply to concentrated extract.1,4

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Evidence

Certain extracts have an antioxidant purpose, but results depend on the recipe. In a 15-month kibble storage study, a tocopherol and rosemary extract blend at 200 ppm did not consistently delay oxidation. That study did not test ground leaves.2,4

Rosemary gives dogs antioxidant protection

Evidence

- None
A feeding trial of 45 young Rottweilers found changes in blood antioxidant and oxidative stress markers. It measured neither illness nor longevity, so those markers do not show a health benefit for dogs eating commercial food.1

Rosemary lowers blood sugar in dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

- None
In the same 45-dog trial, the rosemary-only group had about 14% lower blood glucose than controls. The dogs were healthy puppies, so this result does not support using rosemary to treat diabetes.1

Owners say
Rosemary in kibble triggers seizures
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The worry comes from rosemary essential oil. A 2019 review cites one human with epilepsy who seized after a massage with a rosemary oil blend, and camphor induced seizures in lab animals at 0.5 mL/kg. It cites no dog or food study.9

Brands say
Rosemary makes dog food more appealing
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In the 45-dog trial, the group given food coated with 0.05% rosemary leaf alone left the most food. The authors linked this to reduced palatability but did not test palatability on its own, so rosemary shows no appeal advantage.1

What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoRosemary is added in small amounts for its aroma, not to bulk out kibble. Its leaves contain fiber, fat and protein, but the amounts tested in dog food are too small to contribute meaningful nutrition.1,3
-
Q02
Does it preserve the food?
Not assuredRosemary extract is used for preservation, often alongside other antioxidants. One kibble storage test found that an extract blend did not consistently delay oxidation. A label listing rosemary alone cannot tell you how long the food stays fresh.2,4,5
-
Q03
Should I avoid it for epilepsy?
Unproven riskThe concern rests on rosemary essential oil, where camphor is the suspect, and on a human case report. ASPCA lists the plant as non-toxic to dogs, but that does not address epilepsy. For an epileptic dog, a rosemary-free food is a cheap precaution.6,9

Organic rosemary: what changes

Organic rosemary
Matters for your dog A little
Organic Rosemary
What it means AAFCO defers to the USDA National Organic Program. An organic herb must come from certified land that had no prohibited substances, including most synthetic pesticides, applied for 3 years before harvest. USDA does not treat organic as safer, healthier or more nutritious.
For your dog Organic produce is less likely to carry detectable pesticide residues: a 30% lower risk in a 2012 review of 223 food studies. Differences in exceeding legal limits were small, and rosemary is a tiny share of the food, so the change for the dog is likely negligible.10,11,12
