Chicken
Real protein, with water in the ranking
Chicken is raw flesh and skin, sometimes with attached bone, added before a pet food is cooked. It supplies protein and fat. In kibble, much of its incoming weight is water that leaves during processing, so its place on the list needs context.

Read chicken alongside the rest of the recipe
Chicken near the top means the maker added substantial wet weight of it. Check what follows, especially chicken meal and plant protein ingredients. The finished food's protein analysis tells you its total protein, but neither that number nor chicken's list position tells you how much protein came from chicken.

The story
How fresh chicken moved from poultry plants into kibble
Chicken's path into dog food follows the poultry business. US shoppers have shifted some of their meat buying from red meat to poultry in recent decades, and USDA reports that broiler production grew 19.9% from 2015 to 2025. Every bird also yields parts that earn less at the meat counter, such as backs and necks. Pet food gives the flesh and skin from those parts a paying buyer.4,7
Premium dry foods are often formulated with meat slurries made from fresh meat, rather than relying on rendered meals alone. A 2024 Journal of Animal Science paper pointed out that slurries are believed to be higher quality than rendered meals, yet little research had tested what they do for dogs. Earlier lab work hinted at a gap: in a 2017 rooster test, raw chicken delivered 5.37 kcal of usable energy per gram, against 3.43 for chicken meal.1,2
The sharpest scare involving chicken came from treats, not complete food. Starting in 2007, FDA received reports of pets sickened after eating jerky treats, many imported from China. By the end of 2015 the agency counted about 5,200 complaints tied to chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky, involving more than 6,200 dogs and more than 1,140 dog deaths. More than 360 dogs showed signs of Fanconi syndrome, a kidney disorder. Testing never found a single root cause.8
What it is
How it is made
Poultry processors sell familiar cuts and have other usable parts, including backs and necks. Pet food makers use chicken flesh and skin from this supply. Unlike chicken meal, it enters the recipe with its water still in it.1,4
- 01 // Source Chicken parts Flesh and skin come from processed chickens; attached bone is allowed unless the chicken is labeled deboned.
- 02 // Process Bone removed optionally Deboned chicken has its bone removed. Other chicken ingredients may retain bone attached to the flesh.
- 03 // Process Prepared for mixing Chicken may be minced or made into a slurry so it mixes with the other recipe ingredients.
- 04 // Output Raw chicken The moist ingredient enters pet food production before the finished food is cooked and dried.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
42
% protein
Protein in one tested raw chicken ingredient after excluding water. Its dry matter held more fat than protein, so the cut and skin share matter.

What it does for your dog
Each benefit carries the same evidence grade as the claims below.
-
01
Digestible protein for muscle upkeep
Chicken supplies the essential amino acids dogs must get from food. In a rooster digestibility test, raw chicken's amino acids digested better than chicken meal's. No study has measured muscle outcomes from chicken itself.2

02
Food dogs eat more eagerly
Chicken brings meat flavor and fat that dogs favor. Twenty dogs offered two kibbles preferred the one with 16% chicken slurry by a 2:1 intake ratio. That rests on a single trial.1

Why it is in the bag
Real protein and flavor, with plenty of water weight
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add chicken for animal protein and fat, and because dogs like it: in one two-bowl trial, dogs ate about twice as much of a kibble made with more chicken slurry. Much of its weight is water, and one tested sample held more fat than protein in its dry matter. Lists rank by weight before cooking, so even first place cannot show how much of a kibble's protein it supplies. Far down the list, it likely adds little.1,2,4
-
01
Supplies animal protein
Chicken adds protein to the recipe. How much it contributes to the finished food depends on its inclusion and the other protein sources used alongside it.1,2
-
02
Makes food appealing
In a dog preference test, the kibble with more chicken slurry won over the control. That gives manufacturers a reason to use it beyond its label appeal.1
-
03
Uses poultry at scale
Backs, necks and other less profitable parts have a pet food outlet. Industry reporting identifies chicken as a major animal ingredient in US dog food.4,5
-
04
Adds wet weight
Chicken enters the ingredient list before cooking with its water intact. That water raises its listed weight but does not remain as chicken protein in dry kibble.4,5
How much A controlled dog study tested kibble containing 8% and 16% chicken slurry, with chicken meal reduced as slurry increased.1

2024 // Feeding trial, 3 foods
Dogs ate twice as much kibble with more chicken1
20 healthy adult dogs in a taste test; 9 adult dogs in a digestibility trial
Found. Offered a control kibble and one with 16% chicken slurry, 20 dogs ate the chicken slurry food over the control by a 2:1 intake ratio. In 9 dogs, stool output, scores and pH did not differ among the 3 diets.
What it means. Fresh chicken makes kibble more appealing without changing stools. This one trial shows a taste effect, not a health gain.
-
2022 // Lab blood tests
Researchers named 7 chicken proteins that allergic dogs react to9
Blood serum from 25 dogs: 12 allergic, 10 sensitized, 3 not sensitized
Found. Using a commercial chicken extract, researchers identified 7 major chicken allergens, including serum albumin. One test method found chicken antibodies in 7 of 12 allergic dogs; a second method found antibody-bound proteins in all 12.
What it means. Chicken allergy involves several proteins, not one. Results varied by lab method, so this small study cannot rate blood tests for diagnosing a dog.
-
2017 // Lab blood tests
Only heavily broken-down poultry protein escaped dog chicken antibodies10
Blood serum from 40 dogs with undetectable to high chicken antibody levels
Found. Dog antibodies recognized chicken meat 100% of the time, duck and turkey 97%, chicken meal 73% and mildly hydrolyzed poultry feathers 37%. Extensively hydrolyzed poultry feathers drew 0%.
What it means. Chicken antibodies still recognized partly broken-down poultry protein. The authors concluded only extensive breakdown prevents that. This test-tube work did not test feeding.
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoChicken supplies protein and fat. One tested raw ingredient had about 42% protein in its dry matter. Its water affects its place on a kibble label, but water weight does not make the chicken useless.2,4
-
Q02
Does chicken first mean most meat?
Not necessarilyThe list ranks ingredients by their weight when added. Fresh chicken brings water, while chicken meal has already lost most of its water. Read the other main ingredients; the list alone cannot show the finished food's meat share.4
-
Q03
Does fresh mean raw in kibble?
NoFresh describes the chicken when it enters the recipe. The kibble is cooked afterward. A bag listing fresh chicken is describing an incoming ingredient, not a raw diet for the dog.1,4

Organic, fresh and deboned or boneless chicken compared
One page covers every name. Here is what each label word adds, and whether it changes anything for your dog.
Organic chicken
Matters for your dog A little
Organic Chicken
What it means Defined by the USDA National Organic Program. Birds must eat 100% organic feed, have outdoor access and get no antibiotics from their second day after hatching. Organic pet food must also meet feed rules. It does not mean hormone free compared with other chicken: hormones are banned in all US poultry.
For your dog The real difference is how the bird was raised. A meat meta-analysis found organic chicken higher in omega-3 and total polyunsaturated fat, but only 6 and 5 studies covered chicken, and some found no difference. We found no study testing a health effect in dogs eating organic chicken.11,12,13,14
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Fresh chicken
Matters for your dog No
Fresh Boneless Chicken · Fresh Chicken · Fresh Deboned Chicken
What it means An AAFCO feed term: the chicken was not frozen, cooked, dried, rendered or hydrolyzed, had no salt or preservatives added, and was kept only by refrigeration. It describes the chicken arriving at the plant, not the finished food.
For your dog In kibble or canned food, fresh chicken is cooked with everything else, so its never-frozen state does not reach the bowl. We found no dog study comparing fresh with frozen chicken. Plain chicken also enters wet, so the word does not change list position.4,15
Deboned chicken
Matters for your dog A little
Boneless Chicken · Deboned Chicken · Fresh Boneless Chicken · Fresh Deboned Chicken
What it means AAFCO's definition lets chicken include attached bone. When the bone is removed, the label may say deboned. We found no separate regulatory definition of boneless that we could open. Neither word promises a better cut of meat.
For your dog Removing bone takes out ground bone, which AAFCO notes can supply calcium, so the ingredient carries less mineral. We found no study comparing deboned and bone-in chicken in dogs. Deboned chicken still enters with its water, so it ranks high by weight like chicken with bone.4
