Ginger
A little flavor, with limited health evidence
Ginger is the pungent underground stem commonly dried and ground as a spice. In dog food it adds flavor. Extracts reduced chemotherapy vomiting in one dog experiment, but that result does not show that ginger in kibble treats an upset stomach.

Straight answer
Is Ginger safe for dogs?
Read it as seasoning, not a remedy
Ginger near the end of the ingredient list signals a small amount of seasoning. Look to the ingredients above it for the food's protein, fat and fiber. Do not choose the bag to treat vomiting, diarrhea or joint pain; the evidence does not support that use.

What it is
How it is made
Ginger is grown and sold as a spice crop. Growers harvest the underground stems for their aroma and pungency, then dry them for storage and trade. Ground ginger is milled from that dried crop.5
- 01 // Source Mature rhizomes Growers harvest underground stems after they develop the aroma and pungency wanted in dried spice.
- 02 // Process Washed and prepared Roots and soil are removed, and the rhizomes may be peeled, split or sliced.
- 03 // Process Dried Drying removes moisture so the harvested rhizomes store and ship as a spice.
- 04 // Output Ground ginger The dried rhizomes are milled into powder for mixing with other food ingredients.

% NFE
Nitrogen free extract, mainly carbohydrate, made up about two thirds of one powder sample. Ginger used as seasoning contributes little to the finished food's calories.
Why it is in the bag
Seasoning in a small amount, not a remedy
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add ginger for flavor and for the digestive reputation its name carries on a bag. A European feed panel accepted that ginger flavors feed the same way it flavors food. It often sits low on the list, and labels rank ingredients by weight, so it is likely too little to change the food's nutrition. Company feeding tests used 0.5 to 0.75%, and the health evidence at that level is thin.4,8,9
-
01
Adds pungent flavor
Ginger supplies aroma and pungency. A European feed panel recognizes ginger preparations as flavoring ingredients, which is a clearer recipe job than the health claims on a bag.4,5
-
02
Signals digestive support
Ginger's nausea reputation gives manufacturers a recognizable ingredient name. The dog vomiting experiment tested concentrated extracts, while food trials reported in patents provide weaker support for everyday digestive claims.1,7,8
-
03
Uses existing spice supply
The spice trade already washes, dries and mills ginger. Buying that powder gives a manufacturer a shelf-stable seasoning without making ginger a bulk protein or fiber ingredient.3,5,7,8
How much Company feeding tests used 0.5 to 1% ground ginger; a usual amount across commercial dog foods has not been published.7,8
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Ginger cuts gas and stool odor

Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The dog data is one unpublished company test in 20 dogs at 0.75% ginger, run as a controlled design. Flatulence fell from 3.2 to 2.6 episodes an hour, but odor results were mixed: phenols roughly doubled and sulfur compounds rose.8
-
Brands say
Ginger settles a dog's upset stomach
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
One 1997 dog experiment tested concentrated acetone and ethanol ginger extracts, not ginger powder in food, at 25 to 200 mg/kg against chemotherapy-induced vomiting. It did not test ordinary stomach upset, so this is a model result, not proof for kibble seasoning.1
-
Brands say
Ginger firms loose stools
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A company patent table reported well formed stools at 81% on a control food rising to 87% on a ginger food. The table covers both healthy dogs and dogs with chronic diarrhea fed side by side, and the quoted rows do not state which group they describe. No untreated control ran at the same time as a ginger group, so the change does not prove ginger worked.7
-
Brands say
Ginger eases arthritic pain
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A 3-month controlled dog trial tested ginger extract together with cannabis oil and Boswellia, so pain relief cannot be assigned to ginger. A company feeding test measured joint markers after ginger, not pain.2,7
-
Brands say
Ginger gives dogs antioxidant protection
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A 3-month dog trial reported lower oxidative stress after a supplement containing ginger, cannabis oil and Boswellia. It cannot isolate ginger's effect, and it did not test the small amount listed in kibble.2

What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
No, flavorGinger has a job as seasoning. One powder sample contained carbohydrate and fiber, but the amounts used in company dog feeding tests were too small to make it a meaningful protein or fiber source.3,4,7,8
-
Q02
Will it stop motion sickness?
Not provenThe dog vomiting experiment used concentrated extracts against chemotherapy effects. It did not test car travel or ginger incorporated into kibble, so an ingredient listing is no reason to expect motion sickness relief.1
-
Q03
Is ginger oil the same ingredient?
NoGinger oil and oleoresin are concentrated preparations. A European feed panel assessed an oleoresin level of 1 mg/kg for dog food; that figure does not apply to ground rhizome. Check the exact ingredient name.4,5
