Salmon oil is fat separated from salmon, often from parts left after filleting. It supplies EPA and DHA, omega-3 fats tested for skin and joint conditions in dogs. The ingredient name alone does not tell you how much reaches your dog.

How it is made

Filleting leaves heads, skins and frames that still hold oil. Processors recover it as another product from the same fish. The oil may then be refined before it goes into food or supplements.6,7,8

Makers add salmon oil to supply EPA and DHA, the marine omega-3 fats, plus fat and flavor. Lists run by weight, so when it appears after the main fat, it weighs less than that fat, but the list cannot show how much less. In an arthritis trial, more fish oil in the food raised dogs' blood EPA and DHA and gave modest gains. Whether a given food reaches tested levels depends on figures the list does not show.1,9

    Salmon oil adds these marine omega-3 fats directly. A maker can raise their levels without relying on a dog's conversion of the omega-3 fat in flaxseed oil.4,5

    Adds fat and flavor

    Like other animal oils, it adds calories and flavor. The fat contribution is certain; any skin or joint effect depends on the amount of EPA and DHA in the finished diet.5,9

    Uses salmon leftovers

    Recovering oil from heads, skins and frames gives processors another saleable product from the fish. The source material and extraction method affect the oil they get.7

    The USDA salmon oil entry lists both fats, and a separate analysis measured them in refined salmon oil. This is a sound description of the ingredient, but neither source gives the dose in a finished dog food.5,8

    In a blinded trial completed by 177 dogs, the highest EPA and DHA diet gave modest improvements in some clinical signs. A separate 77-dog placebo-controlled trial found no difference in its main pain outcomes. Neither tested salmon oil alone.1,2

    In a 6-week study, krill oil raised dogs' blood EPA and DHA while flaxseed oil did not. That is a fatty acid result, not a clinical health outcome; the krill supplier funded and authored the study.4

    The USDA entry identifies salmon oil as fat with EPA and DHA, and AAFCO describes oils as sources of nutrients and flavor. The fair question is how much the finished food supplies, which its ingredient list does not quantify.5,9
