An essential zinc source, not a coat upgrade

Zinc proteinate is zinc bound to amino acids or protein fragments. Manufacturers add it to help meet a dog's zinc needs. Zinc matters for skin and immune function, but this form has not shown a coat advantage over zinc sulfate in adequately fed dogs.

Mineral supplement makers produce zinc proteinate for animal feed. It is made for a trace mineral premix, where a concentrated powder lets food makers add a measured amount of zinc throughout a recipe.7,8

Zinc proteinate is a mineral supplement, not bulk. Dogs need zinc for skin and immune function, and makers add a measured dose because zinc already in grains and legumes is often tied up by phytate. It usually sits near the end of the list, and lists run by weight, so the amount is tiny. That tiny dose still does real work toward the food's zinc target. The proteinate form has not beaten sulfate in dogs.1,3,4

    AAFCO's adult maintenance profile sets a minimum of 80 mg/kg zinc on a dry matter basis. Zinc proteinate contributes toward that total. Its presence on the ingredient list does not reveal the food's total zinc.3,7
