Calcium Pantothenate
A tiny vitamin dose with a real job
Calcium pantothenate is a manufactured, dry form of vitamin B5 mixed into a food's vitamin premix. It helps the recipe meet a dog's B5 requirement for normal metabolism; it does not turn a balanced food into an energy or coat treatment.
Role in the food Supporting nutrient- What it is
- A dry calcium salt that supplies pantothenic acid, the form of vitamin B5 dogs use.
- Made from
- Pantolactone and a beta-alanine calcium salt
- Main job
- Supplies vitamin B5
- Typical amount
- Feed reports cite 8 to 50 mg/kg
- Watch for
- Incomplete diets lacking enough vitamin B5
- Not the same as
- Calcium carbonate
Straight answer
Is Calcium Pantothenate safe for dogs?
Read the adequacy statement, then move on
Calcium pantothenate near the end of a bag's ingredient list is an ordinary vitamin addition. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage, then judge the food by the full recipe. This ingredient earns its place by supplying B5; it is no reason to expect extra energy or a shinier coat.
- Why it is in the food
- Supplies vitamin B5
- Watch for
- Incomplete primary diets

The story
From a yeast growth factor to a feed vitamin
Pantothenic acid entered science through yeast, not dogs. In 1933 the biochemist Roger J. Williams showed that yeast needed it to grow and reported it in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. He named it from the Greek pantothen, meaning "from everywhere", because he found it in almost every food he tested.10,11
Three years later, Elvehjem and Jukes showed the same compound was a growth and antidermatitis factor in chickens. The turning point came in 1940. Williams worked out its chemical structure, and a team of chemists published the total synthesis of pure pantothenic acid. From then on, the vitamin could be made in a factory instead of pulled out of food.10,11
Dog research followed. In 1944 The Journal of Nutrition published studies of pantothenic acid deficiency in dogs, showing what puppies lose without it. In 1953 Fritz Lipmann shared the Nobel Prize for discovering coenzyme A, the molecule the body builds from this vitamin. Today calcium pantothenate is an approved feed additive in Europe, with pet foods supplemented at about 8 to 14 mg per kg.1,10
What it is
How it is made
This ingredient comes from vitamin manufacturing, not a food processing leftover. Producers make the active form of pantothenic acid from chemical starting materials and supply its calcium salt as a dry powder for feed premixes.3,4,5
- 01 // Source Chemical starting materials Pantolactone and a calcium salt of beta-alanine provide the parts used to make calcium pantothenate.
- 02 // Process Select active form Production separates or selectively makes the D form of pantolactone used for biologically active vitamin B5.
- 03 // Process React ingredients Manufacturers heat the pantolactone with the beta-alanine salt in an alcohol solvent to form calcium pantothenate.
- 04 // Output Dry vitamin powder The feed additive arrives as a crystalline or spray-dried powder for mixing into a vitamin premix.

Benefits
What it does for your dog
Each benefit carries the same evidence grade as the claims below.
-
01
Normal energy use from food
Pantothenic acid is the raw material for coenzyme A, the molecule Lipmann's Nobel work tied to metabolism. A complete food needs enough of it; amounts beyond that add no extra energy.1,10

02
Normal gut, nerve and immune function
Animals short on B5 develop nervous, gut and immune system problems along with poor growth. Enough B5 prevents that shortfall; nothing shows extra B5 improves these systems in a well-fed dog.1,10

03
A vitamin dose that keeps
In a year-long storage test, pantothenic acid kept more than 90% of its activity in vitamin premixes. That test used piglet premixes, not dog food, and did not measure kibble cooking.13

Why it is in the bag
A real vitamin B5 source, in a tiny dose
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add it to supply vitamin B5, which dogs use to make coenzyme A. AAFCO's dog food profiles list pantothenic acid as a required nutrient, and deficiency harmed growing pups. Labels run in descending order by weight, and this powder is dosed in milligrams per kilogram, so it sits near the end of most lists. That small amount is the job: it covers the food's B5 target. It is not filler, and it adds no extra energy.1,2,4,9,14
-
01
Meets the B5 target
Dogs need pantothenic acid to make coenzyme A, which helps cells process food. A measured addition lets the recipe meet its vitamin target despite variation in other ingredients.2,5,9
-
02
Adds a measured dose
Commercial chemical synthesis makes a standardized, concentrated powder. Feed reports describe additions measured in milligrams per kilogram, so manufacturers need very little material for this job.3,4,5
-
03
Mixes through premixes
The dry powder goes into a vitamin premix before it is distributed through feed. That gives manufacturers a practical way to spread a small dose through a large batch.3,4
How much A feed laboratory report describes 8 to 50 mg of calcium pantothenate per kilogram of feed; dog recipes may differ.4

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Brands say
It prevents vitamin B5 deficiency
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a controlled study of 22 dogs, removing calcium pantothenate from a purified diet reduced appetite and growth in pups; oral dosing reversed the decline. That shows its value in a deficient diet, not an extra benefit from adding more to complete food.1,2
-
Brands say
It gives healthy dogs extra energy
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

Vitamin B5 is needed for energy metabolism, and AAFCO lists 12 mg/kg dry matter for dog food. The dog experiment tested deficiency and replacement, not an energy boost in dogs already getting enough B5.1,2,9

It improves a dog's skin and coat

The 22-dog deficiency study found somewhat coarser hair in deprived dogs but no hair loss, graying or other skin disorder. It did not test whether extra calcium pantothenate improves the coat of a well-fed dog.1

Its calcium builds stronger bones
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

The powder contains 8.2 to 8.6% calcium, but feed uses only milligrams of powder per kilogram. Even the upper reported feed amount supplies about 4 mg of calcium, far below a dog's dietary calcium target.2,4,7
The research
Studies worth knowing
Published research we read for this page, dog studies first.
-
2025 // Stored blood sample comparison
Dogs with liver disease showed higher, not lower, B5 levels12
66 client-owned dogs with chronic liver disease and 50 healthy blood-donor dogs
Found. Serum vitamin B5 ran higher in the liver disease group, a median 176.5 vs 116.1 ng/mL. Riboflavin was the vitamin that ran low, 48.4 vs 85.5 ng/mL in healthy dogs.
What it means. Liver disease showed no sign of draining B5 in these dogs, so this study gives no reason to seek out extra calcium pantothenate.
-
2019 // Lab storage test, 12 months
Vitamin B5 kept over 90% of its strength for a year13
Vitamin premixes made for weanling piglets; no dog premix storage study was found
Found. Premixes stored at 25 °C and 60% humidity were tested for a year. Pantothenic acid kept more than 90% of its activity, while vitamins A, K3 and B1 lost more over time.
What it means. The B5 in a vitamin premix keeps well before it reaches the food; this test did not measure losses from cooking kibble.
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies vitamin B5 in a measured dose. AAFCO includes pantothenic acid among the nutrients dog food must provide, and a dog deficiency experiment showed what happens when the vitamin is withheld.1,2
-
Q02
Why is it near the end?
Tiny doseFeed reports describe additions in milligrams per kilogram, so this ingredient belongs near the end of a weight-ordered list. Its position tells you little about whether the finished food contains enough vitamin B5.4
-
Q03
Does synthetic mean unsafe?
NoChemical synthesis is how this feed additive is made. A European food safety review found calcium pantothenate safe for target animals under authorized feed conditions, including checks on impurities in tested batches.3,5
-
Q04
Should I add a B5 supplement?
Usually noChoose a food with a nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage. That statement addresses the finished diet; seeing calcium pantothenate on the ingredient list does not tell you its final vitamin B5 level.2,8
