Vitamin B5

A necessary vitamin, not an energy boost

Vitamin B5 is pantothenic acid, usually added to kibble as calcium D-pantothenate. Dogs need it to make coenzyme A, which helps them use food for energy. Extra B5 has not been shown to make a healthy dog more active.

Straight answer

Is Vitamin B5 safe for dogs?

Check the whole diet, not this line

Vitamin B5 near the end of the list is normal because a dog needs only a small amount. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage, then judge the food as a whole. The B5 listing shows a vitamin source, not a reason to expect extra energy or a shinier coat.

What it is

How it is made

Vitamin manufacturers synthesize calcium D-pantothenate for food and feed. It is made to supply a measured amount of B5, not recovered as a leftover. The finished powder goes into a vitamin mix.4,9

  1. 01 // Source Two building blocks Industrial synthesis starts with D-pantolactone and beta-alanine rather than extracting B5 from food.
  2. 02 // Process Join molecules A chemical reaction combines the building blocks to produce pantothenic acid.
  3. 03 // Process Add calcium Adding a calcium salt produces calcium D-pantothenate crystals; the reagent is not specified here.
  4. 04 // Output Vitamin powder A white powder reaches feed plants for measured blending into a vitamin mix.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

92

% activity

Calcium D-pantothenate supplies about 92% of its dry weight as active pantothenic acid. The salt weight and vitamin amount differ.

Calcium D-pantothenate 99.7-100.2%4
Pantothenic acid activity 92%5
Calcium 8.2-8.6%6

These figures describe the dry vitamin additive, not finished kibble. The salt assay comes from 5 manufacturer-submitted batches; the calcium range is a pharmacopoeia specification.4,6

Why it is in the bag

A real vitamin, added in a tiny measured dose

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Manufacturers add calcium D-pantothenate so the food reliably meets AAFCO's minimum for pantothenic acid, a vitamin dogs must get from their diet. The dry salt stays stable in a vitamin premix, so the dose is predictable. It sits near the end of the list because labels go by weight and the dose is tiny, not because it is filler. It adds no protein, energy or bulk, just the vitamin.3,5,8

  1. 01

    Meets a vitamin requirement

Dogs need dietary pantothenic acid to make coenzyme A. AAFCO specifies a minimum for complete food, so manufacturers add a measured source when the rest of the recipe does not supply enough.3,7

  2. 02

    Keeps dosing consistent

The dry powder has defined vitamin activity and goes into a vitamin mix. That lets a formulator measure the added B5 alongside the amount supplied by other ingredients.4,5,9

  3. 03

    Supplies B5 at scale

Chemical synthesis produces the same concentrated feed ingredient in quantity. Because the food needs only milligrams per kilogram, the vitamin mix adds nutrition without changing the recipe's bulk.3,4,9

How much AAFCO's dog food profile specifies at least 12 mg of pantothenic acid per kg of dry food for adult maintenance and growth.3

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Vets say

Vitamin B5 prevents poor growth from deficiency

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a controlled study of 22 dogs, B5-deprived pups lost appetite and growth, then improved when calcium pantothenate was restored. It shows why adequate B5 matters, not a growth benefit from extra B5 in complete food.1

  2. Brands say

    More B5 improves a dog's vitamin status

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A trial assigned 64 healthy dogs to diets with graded vitamin intakes. Blood pantothenate rose with intake by day 122, but several vitamins changed together and a higher blood reading was not shown to improve health.2

  3. Brands say

Extra B5 gives healthy dogs more energy

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

B5 helps make coenzyme A, which is involved in using food for energy. The 64-dog vitamin trial measured blood levels and coat condition, not activity. That mechanism does not demonstrate an energy boost from extra B5.2,7

  4. Brands say

    More B5 makes a dog's coat shinier

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Coat and hair condition did not change in the 64-dog trial despite graded vitamin intakes. Several vitamins changed together, so it cannot isolate B5, but the study provides no support for a shinier coat.2

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies an essential vitamin in a small amount. It contributes no meaningful protein, fat or bulk. Its place near the end of an ingredient list reflects the dose, not a lack of purpose.3,8

  2. Q02

    Is calcium pantothenate vitamin B5?

    Yes

Calcium D-pantothenate is a dry source of pantothenic acid. Its calcium is part of the salt. This ingredient is added for B5, not to meet the dog's calcium requirement.4,5,6

  3. Q03

    Should I add a B5 supplement?

    Usually no

A complete food is formulated or tested for its stated life stage. The dog study showing harm used a deliberately deficient diet, while graded vitamin intakes in healthy dogs did not improve coat condition.1,2,8
